The revised figures are in, and Spider-Man has climbed over the Avengers.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has taken the record for the largest North American opening weekend, with $360 million in ticket sales across the US and Canada, according to Sony Pictures. The previous holder was Avengers: Endgame, which set the mark at $357 million in 2019.
Earlier counts had Tom Holland’s fourth solo turn as the webslinger falling just short of that number, with takings put at $335 million before projections were revised upward to the record figure.
Brand New Day and Endgame are now the only two films ever to pass $300 million in a single weekend.
The global picture
Worldwide, the film sits at $932 million, which leaves it second on the all-time global debut list behind Endgame’s $1.2 billion. A run past $2 billion by the end of its theatrical release looks likely — a threshold only seven films have ever crossed:
- Avatar (2009) — $2.92 billion
- Avengers: Endgame (2019) — $2.79 billion
- Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) — $2.33 billion
- Ne Zha 2 (2025) — $2.27 billion
- Titanic (1997) — $2.26 billion
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) — $2.07 billion
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — $2.04 billion
A franchise Marvel cannot afford to lose
Spider-Man remains among the most dependable earners in the Marvel catalogue, and Holland’s tenure has been particularly lucrative. Homecoming reached $880 million worldwide in 2017, Far From Home followed with $1.13 billion in 2019, and No Way Home closed out its run in 2021 on $1.9 billion. Numbers like those make the studio’s grip on his contract easy to understand.
What the reviews said
Euronews Culture’s review of the film credited the change behind the camera: “Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who has taken the reins from regular director Jon Watts, does a great job in committing to the character’s comic roots reset, making the stakes believable, and ensuring the emotion matches the spectacle.”
The verdict continued: “Despite its shortcomings and not being the slam-dunk the MCU so badly needs, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is bolstered by consistently strong action sequences and a terrific performance from Holland, who can now safely be crowned the greatest on-screen Spider-Man. All four of his solo outings prove how badly Marvel needs him on its roster of heroes.”
