Presidents Day arrives with a clear change in rhythm for Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department, which is shifting curbside and facility operations in recognition of the holiday. The adjustment is designed to keep collections moving while acknowledging that Monday’s usual routes will not run.
On Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, curbside collection does not take place for customers normally served that day. Instead, those Monday households are asked to hold their carts for the following day, when service resumes on a delayed schedule.
The pause extends beyond neighborhood pickups. All facilities and administrative offices are closed for the holiday, including the Residential Drop Off Centers, the Environmental Service Center, the Westpark Recycling Center, and the Reuse Warehouse.
Tuesday and Wednesday Shift the Week Forward
When Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026 arrives, the city’s collection pattern restarts, but it does so one step behind its typical pace. Residents who usually see service on Monday should place their trash and recycling carts out on Tuesday, allowing crews to complete Monday’s routes on that day.
Tuesday is also when facilities and administrative offices reopen after the Monday closure. With the Residential Drop Off Centers, Environmental Service Center, Westpark Recycling Center, and Reuse Warehouse back in operation, the city’s waste and recycling network returns to its normal functioning, even as curbside schedules remain temporarily staggered.
At the same time, Tuesday’s regularly scheduled customers need to think ahead to the next day. Those residents should place their carts out on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, because Tuesday collections will be serviced then, keeping the one-day delay consistent across the early part of the week.
Regular Service Returns on Thursday
By Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, the department’s curbside schedule returns to normal. After the early-week shift caused by the Monday holiday pause, routes resume their standard cadence and the temporary delay concludes.
For many residents, the week will feel less complicated than it sounds. Households that receive Thursday or Friday collection do not see their pickup days move, and those customers should place their containers out on their regularly scheduled collection day.
Taken together, the message for the week is simple: Monday service slides to Tuesday, and Tuesday service slides to Wednesday, while the latter part of the week stays intact and the city returns to its regular schedule by Thursday.
